Answers to Common Questions

Q: How is United Way of Manatee County affiliated to United Way of America?
A: The United Way of Manatee County pays its dues to United Way of America annually and is given some guidelines to run itself by. United Way of Manatee County reports directly to their Board of Directors and is run as its own corporation.

Q: Can I designate my donation to other charities?
A: Yes, you may designate your donation to any 501 c(3). Your donation could be designated for the Community Impact Fund for United Way of Manatee County, any one or more of the individual impact areas, or another non-profit.

Q: Does my gift stay here in Manatee County?
A: Yes, your gift supports local programs in your community unless you tell us otherwise.

Q: What is the process used to determine the distribution of donated funds?
A: United Way partner agencies complete a funding application process for all programs for they are seeking support. These programs are categorized under the four community impact areas and evaluated by the Community Investment Committee. This committee is made up of over 40 local volunteers representing a cross section of our community and using several evaluation tools, such as site visits, program outcomes, financial reviews and available funds, the committee recommends fund distribution that best meets Manatee County's most pressing needs. United Way's volunteer board approves all final community investments.

Q: How many agencies does the United Way of Manatee County support?
A: United Way of Manatee County actually funds programs within our partner agencies. We have 40 partner agencies with over 90 programs supported by the United Way Community Impact Fund.

Q: Will my pledge count with the employee giving at my place of work?
A: Yes, your pledge is included as part of your company's total employee giving, unless you prefer otherwise.

Q: What options are available for payment of my pledge?
A: If you work for a company that has a payroll deduction plan, you may have your pledge handled in that manner. Other options are direct bill, credit card, personal check, or securities transfer. A combination of any of these options is also possible, if desired.

Q: Who is considered a Leadership Giver?
A: Anyone who gives a gift of $500 or more annually to United Way is considered a Leadership Giver.

Q: What is the Tocqueville Society?
A: The Tocqueville Society is United Way's national leadership giving and recognition club designed to foster, promote, and recognize the vital importance of personal giving at an exceptional level ($10,000+). All Society members are recognized in a national Alexis de Tocqueville registry which is printed and distributed annually.

Q: The Society is named for whom?
A: The Society honors a French aristocrat, Alexis de Tocqueville, who wrote about his admiration of the American spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common goal.
